The Men of Pilates

Ladies AND gentlemen…

It’s no secret that Pilates classes are often dominated by women, with a few men here and there. But, guys, why is that? Do you think Pilates is just an easy stretchfest that couldn’t possibly work out your big, manly muscles? Well, I respond to that with a dare: I dare you to come to ABC Pilates and try a class, and you tell me if you still feel the same way once that hour is up.

Pilates is a hard workout, but it’s not painful. It’s low impact, but it’s not low difficulty. If you have knee or back issues from your high school/collegiate-athlete glory days, Pilates is a great workout to keep you feeling fit and strong without aggravating those old injuries. Seriously guys, why do you think so many professional football players, soccer players, and many other athletes practice Pilates?

Whether you’re a gym rat or an out-of-shape couch potato, trust me guys, you can benefit greatly from a Pilates practice. The truth is that Pilates was created by a man (Joseph Pilates) for men. The benefits, such as increased flexibility, strengthening of deep muscles, etc.—were acknowledged way back then in the 1920’s, and they’re just as true to this day.

Try This: Chest Expansion

Clients are always asking me, “Does Pilates really make you taller?” My response: “ABSOLUTELY!” But, how?

Exercises such as Chest Expansion are the answer. We spend most days hunched over sitting at a computer, browsing on our smartphones, driving and watching television. Couple this with good old gravity, and the result is chronically poor posture and what I refer to as “Little Old Lady Syndrome,” when your body actually begins to shrink! Chest expansion can help reverse these effects and allow us to stand tall again.

Embracing the Old and the New

Occasionally I will receive a phone call from someone looking specifically for a studio that teaches the “Classical Pilates Method.” When practicing Classical Pilates, you only perform the actual exercises created by Joseph Pilates himself; you do them in a specific order and with his intention.

My response to calls like that is usually something along the lines of, yes! We do teach Classical Pilates exercises! However, here at ABC Pilates we also add in modern modalities to create unique workouts that are timeless yet also exciting and ever-challenging.

Which is Better: Weights Vs. Cardio?

Between the busy holiday schedules that derail regular fitness regimens and the looming pressure of making New Year’s Resolutions (not to mention all those catered cocktail parties,) December is the month that many people begin to reevaluate their workout routine. We all want to know what the best, most effective workout is for quickly whipping us back into shape, and there’s no greater debate than the ‘Cardio vs. Weight Training’ one.

Dear Annie: Pilates is Here to Stay

Dear Ms. Annie Lowrey,

Have you ever seen a nice, polite lady from the South get really, really mad?

Well, that was me a little over a month ago after reading your New York Magazine article, “The Pilatespocalypse: How the Method that Started the Boutique-Fitness Trend is Going Bust.” You say that Pilates is over, that it isn’t as popular or relevant as the other “boutique-fitness” classes like spin or CrossFit. You write that Pilates class attendance is lower than ever and that studios everywhere are struggling to stay open. For gosh sakes, you call Pilates a fad.

Dear Annie: you are wrong. Continue reading “Dear Annie: Pilates is Here to Stay”

OUR CLIENTS SAY IT BEST...

I joined ABC looking for a yoga studio but found pilates was more of my speed. This is not just a place to exercise but an environment where friends come together to get fit, healthy, and happy. I love the instructors who take good care of everyone. I always get the best encouragement possible! I also like the small class sizes for anything from yoga and pilates to Zumba and TRX. Thanks, ABC Fit Studio, for making being healthy fun!
— Candice D.
When my wife convinced me to try ABC Fit, little did I know it would become an almost daily fixture in my life. I enjoy multiple classes weekly and each is very special in approach to strength, balance, core, flexibility, and overall fitness. Feeling better and stronger physically leads to more enjoyment in all activities. I feel stronger and fitter and look forward to continuing to rely on ABC Fit as an integral part of my life.

I’ve been doing pilates for almost 3 years now, and I feel stronger and have improved functionally in my daily activities
I was recommended by my physical therapist when I was a patient with many joint problems. My PT thought Pilates would help me, and it did!
I feel stronger, and have a better tone, range of motion, and a stronger core. I can get up from a low sofa with less effort now as my core plus legs are stronger; I owe all these improvements to Pilates. My teacher is patient and kind, always helpful — thank you!
— Surinder B.
I certainly enjoyed the Pilates session with Charlotte — it provides some pain relief, increased flexibility, and makes me want to be more active.

I have been with ABC for about 7 years, and its biggest benefit has to be no more lower back pain and much more flexibility. Love it here!
— Mike P.
I love ABC Fit!!! Over the years, I’ve worked out at many places, but this is the first one I absolutely love — so much so that I usually come 7 days a week! What is so special are the small classes that mean lots of individual attention, the extraordinarily knowledgeable instructors, and the nice variety of classes. It has been a huge benefit to my well-being.
— Linda T.
My balance has definitely improved, and I feel stronger. The ABC classes are wonderful! Zumba has always been a joy. Great to dance, dance, dance!
— Brenda
ABC has helped me heal from knee surgery. The classes and teachers are amazing! It is a very welcoming and friendly studio.
