Who Needs Pilates?

If I asked a person on the street to close their eyes and imagine a typical Pilates student, I bet their brain would pull up an image of a posh celebrity with a man bun, or a slender woman in a sports bra hanging upside down. In recent years Pilates has gotten a reputation for being elitist, “scary” and expensive. However, that’s just not true here at ABC Pilates! We’re out to prove that not only is Pilates for everyone, but that everyone needs Pilates.

The Tough Case

I recently got a call at the studio from a friend telling me that her 18-year-old daughter had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which causes overly flexible joints that can dislocate, and her doctor had recommended Pilates. Fortunately, I’ve worked with another client who had EDS, so I knew right away what type of Pilates practice and modifications would work great for her daughter. I confidently told my friend, “Yes, she needs Pilates!”

The Golden Girl

I currently work with a client, Donna, who is 80 years old and only has about 30% lung capacity, but she has been doing Pilates for many years since her doctor recommended it. Not only do we focus on keeping her moving and strong, but also on helping to increase her lung capacity. She needs Pilates!

The Kid

I also have a 15-year-old client. He plays baseball and is very active, however he’s currently recovering from an injury. His physical therapist recommend Pilates to continue to stretch and strengthen, and he is LOVING Pilates! He’s already feeling the benefits… plus he tells me his teammates are all very curious about Pilates now. They need Pilates!

So next time you’re excitedly encouraging your friend to try Pilates, and they say they don’t think it’s for them, say it loud and proud: “Pilates is for everyone, and everyone needs Pilates!”
